eBay la France!
By Jayson Matthews
October 6, 2000

eBay continued its planned global domination of the online auction market today with the announcement of its new French Web site, eBay France. The San Jose-based company already has localized sites running in Germany, Australia, the U.K, Japan, and Canada, and plans implementation in 25 more countries by year-end 2005.

In a slightly absurd display of stereotyping, the company described the launch as a new means for French buyers and sellers to "trade popular French items, such as Napoleonic coins and Tintin comics."

Like other international eBay sites, eBay France users will be able to trade in their local currency, as well as search for items located throughout eBay's global database, estimated at nearly 5 million items everyday.

"The launch of eBay France brings our successful online trading model to another of the world's top Internet markets," says Meg Whitman, president and CEO, eBay. "The site will allow French users to trade locally while also giving them access to eBay's worldwide community of 15.8 million registered users. No other Web site offers French traders a proven local service with a global reach."

To promote the launch of the site, Whitman says eBay France is waiving all listing fees for sellers for a limited period.
