By Jayson Matthews July 28, 2000 Most publishers charge for their books, but Say I Can is giving them away free. The Berkeley-based publisher today announced that one of their computer books, "The Dragon NaturallySpeaking Guide", is available free on the Web. The Dragon NaturallySpeaking Guide will be ad-supported, with banners displayed along with pages from the book, generating (hopefully) revenue for the publisher. "We see free publishing as a new economic model for computer books," said Dan Newman, president of Say I Can. "We expect our reading audience to expand exponentially beyond people who now find our books in bookstores." If it happens, it will be a first. Online books have no more taken over the offline book market than email has killed off the post office or online news axed the printed newspaper. "Consumers will still pay for the convenience of having a printed book to reference easily," says Newman. "This is a value-added service rather than a replacement service." |
